Skinister Medical Adhesive For Ostomy Care
Why use Skinister Medical Adhesive for Ostomy Care
Most ostomy wafers will come with a layer of adhesive already applied. However, the thin adhesive layer might not create a strong enough bond to the skin for extended wear. This can sometimes cause discomfort or leakage. Skinister Medical Adhesive can be applied in addition to this adhesive to help provide a secure seal and maintain your skin health.
How to Use Skinister Medical Grade Adhesive Spray for an Ostomy System
Follow these simple steps to apply Skinister Medical Grade Adhesive to your Ostomy system.
Step 1
Begin by cleaning the skin around your stoma.
Step 2
Prepare your ostomy pouching system as instructed.
Step 3
Remove the protective liner from the adhesive skin barrier on the pouching system.
Step 4
If using the spray bottle (2oz and 4oz sizes), spray the adhesive evenly on to the adhesive side of the pouching system.
- If using the drip bottle (1oz size), drip a desired amount of adhesive onto the adhesive side of the pouching system. With clean hands, distribute the adhesive evenly using a clean finger before it becomes tacky.
- Spray tops may be removed, if needed, and a small amount of adhesive poured into a clean container and brushed onto targeted areas.
- It is safe to apply Skinister Medical Adhesive directly to skin, but not to stoma, as it is a mucous membrane. Protect and avoid stoma if applying adhesive to targeted areas of skin.
Step 5
Allow the adhesive to dry for 5 minutes, then apply your pouching system as instructed.
Remember, only use Medical Adhesive as directed.
Tips on using Skinister Medical Adhesive
- When first using Skinister Medical Adhesive, test a small amount on your skin to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction.
- The amount of adhesive you apply to your ostomy system will depend on the ostomy system as well as your own personal preference. Familiarize yourself with different amounts of adhesive until you find what works best for you.
- If your spray nozzle becomes clogged, clean the nozzle with acetone or Skinister Medical Adhesive Remover.
Adhesive Frequently Asked Questions
Is it necessary to use the Skinister Medical Adhesive on the entire skin barrier?
- You can spray it on the entire adhesive surface of the pouching system. However, if there are particular areas that are not adhering well, you can use it only in those areas.
What is the best way to spray the adhesive?
- Hold the spray bottle about 6 inches away from your ostomy system. Squirt the adhesive until the surface is coated evenly with the desired amount of adhesive. It may be immediately spread over appliance with a clean fingertip before it gets tacky.
- The spray pump may also be removed if needed to pour a little adhesive into a small clean container to brush onto targeted areas.
Can a second adhesive coat be applied?
- To strengthen the adhesive bond, a second coat can be applied if necessary. Wait 5 minutes between each coat, and wait 5 minutes after the second coat before applying your pouching system.
Can the adhesive be applied directly to the skin?
- Skinister Medical Adhesive can be applied directly to the skin. It contains no irritating aerosol propellants, and the solvent is skin-safe and evaporates during the drying time. Both the adhesive and solvent have been tested on human skin. Letting the solvent dry is the key to avoiding irritation.
Is it difficult to remove the adhesive from the skin?
- Skinister Medical Adhesive has strong hold but also gentle release, and should come off easily when removing the pouching system. This may vary, however, depending on the adhesive of your pouching system. Skinister Medical Adhesive Remover spray can help with removal by spraying around edges of system before removal to avoid skin tears or irritation.

Skinister Medical Adhesive Remover Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to wash the adhesive remover off my skin?
- It is not necessary to rinse Skinister Medical Adhesive Remover off as it evaporates and does not leave residue. If skin has been cleaned properly before removal of barrier, it should be ready for next system unless there has been leakage from stoma.
Is an adhesive remover always necessary?
- Using Skinister Medical Adhesive Remover is optional and dependent on your personal preference, but it can make it easier to remove your skin barrier and any adhesive residue.
- Using adhesive removers can help people with fragile skin (older patients, patients who have experienced contact dermatitis with other products etc) avoid medical adhesive-related skin injury (MARSI). Avoiding skin tears is essential to prevent skin infections around the stoma since it may be exposed to fecal material or urine in case of urostomy. Skin tears create a point of entry for infection into the bloodstream which can become very serious.
- Our remover is not the same solvent that is in the adhesive, and is less drying than many other removers leaving the skin feeling soft and clean.
Will this be uncomfortable to use?
- Skinister Medical Adhesive Remover is alcohol-free to give you a sting-free experience. When used correctly, your pouch removal process will be easier and more comfortable when using the adhesive remover.

Skinister Medical Adhesive: A Medical Grade Prosthetic Adhesive Spray
Skinister Medical Adhesive is a skin safe glue designed for medical applications including ostomy bags, mastectomy breast forms, condom catheters, and bandages. It can also be used to attach maxillofacial prosthetics.
Skinister Medical Adhesive Remover can be used to remove appliances between uses and clean skin gently.
How to apply Skinister Medical Adhesive
How to Apply:
- Prepare surfaces by washing with soap and water as needed, and allow to fully dry.
- Apply 1-2 light coats of adhesive to one or both surfaces. Skinister Medical Adhesive may be applied to skin, taking care to avoid mucous membranes (stomas), and any broken skin or wounds. Applying to both surfaces may significantly increase adhesion.
- Wait 5 minutes in between coats of adhesive, or after last coat of adhesive to allow adhesive to fully dry before applying appliance to skin. This allows solvent to evaporate and provides maximum adhesion. Trapped solvent is the most common cause of skin irritation, so this step is critical.
- Press and hold device against skin with moderate pressure for 60 seconds.
- Maximum strength achieved by applying pressure for several minutes.
Remove with Skinister Medical Adhesive Remover.
